This resource is great for:
Getting inspired! To get on your bike, to think about your fantastic future and to get creative!
Introduction
Strap on your helmet and watch this fun and fast-paced event celebrating the final book in Olympic champion cyclist Chris Hoy’s fantastic Flying Fergus series. Joined by his writing and illustration team, Joanna Nadin and Clare Elsom, Chris shares stories from the entertaining adventure series all about an ordinary boy and his big cycling dreams.
Part 1 – Living the Dream
Fergus Hamilton bears some striking similarities to another young Scottish boy who dreamed of being an amazing cyclist – Chris Hoy! Do you know what you want to be when you grow up? Close your eyes and imagine that your dream has come true. What are you doing? Where do you live and work? What does it feel like? Who are the team that you work with and what materials do you use? Quickly write a description of yourself, answering these questions, then – like illustrator Clare Elsom – draw a picture of yourself doing your dream job.
Part 2 – DIY Challenge
During the event Chris talks about one of his cycling heroes, Graeme Obree, who built his own bikes using parts from an old washing machine! Using things you have around the house (though maybe not from your washing machine!) we challenge you to make:
- A bike which looks like a real bike (compare your creation to a picture or your real bike – does it have all the parts?)
- Wheels which really turn (extra points if they’re controlled by a chain and pedals!)
- A bike seat which can hold your own weight.
- A bike bell.
If you can do all of the above at the same time we will be very, very impressed!
Part 3 – Get on Your Bike!
Cycling is a lot of fun, and a great way to get some exercise. Why not go on a cycle with your family, have a race, time trials or even learn some tricks!
